Offline Setup Guide

Offline mode lets a school sit a full computer-based test with no internet at all. Answers are captured on each device, then sync back to your account automatically.

What Is Offline Mode

When a student opens an exam link without a connection, Trips serves the exam from the copy already stored on their device. Questions, options and the timer keep working exactly as they do online. Every answer is saved locally until a connection returns, then the answer sheet is uploaded and the local copy is cleared.

Requirements

  • A device per student — a laptop, desktop or phone with a modern browser.
  • The exam link opened once while the student is still online, so the exam is stored for offline use.
  • Charged batteries, or devices left plugged in for the length of the paper.
  • The exam activated and the students assigned before the paper starts.
  • No cabling or internet needed during the exam itself.

How to Prepare an Exam Offline

  1. Create the exam and add every question while you still have internet access.
  2. Assign the students who will sit the paper.
  3. Activate the exam so it is ready for the session.
  4. Open the exam link once on each student device while it is online, so the exam is stored on that device.
  5. Check that each device shows the exam title and the expected number of questions, then you can disconnect.
  6. Start the paper. Each student opens the exam and the timer begins when they start.

What Happens on Submit

  • Answers are saved on the device as the student works, so a restart or a flat battery does not lose them.
  • When the timer ends, or the student submits, a confirmation appears on the device.
  • The answer sheet uploads automatically the next time the device is online.
  • Results appear in the teacher’s result table as soon as the sync completes.
  • Each attempt is scored once. If a device syncs the same answer sheet twice, the duplicate is ignored.

Troubleshooting

  • The exam will not open offline. The link was probably never opened while the device was online. Reconnect for a moment, open the exam link, then try again.
  • A device restarted mid-exam. Reopen the exam link on that device. Answers saved before the restart are still there, and the timer continues.
  • Results are missing for one student. That device has not synced yet. Connect it to the internet and keep the browser open until the sync finishes.
  • The timer caught a student mid-answer. Auto-submit saves whatever was entered before time ran out, and those answers are still scored.
